Electrify! Transition Strains New York Grid

The rapid electrification of everything is putting a strain on the New York grid as gas power plants are being shut down faster than any replacement can be built.

It was only a matter of time, really

The situation in New York right now:

  • Electric stoves are replacing gas stoves

  • Heat pumps are replacing gas boilers

  • EVs are strongly encouraged

The result:

  • Demand for electricity is surging

  • Generation of electricity is not increasing

Of course, absolutely no one could have predicted that shutting down all of the NY gas plants would result in this outcome.

No. No, that doesn’t make any sense at all, right?

Wrong. Turns out that the “inefficient” natural gas plants provide all the power.

And those millions of $$$ in solar panels they installed…

…that only work during the day.

Coming soon to a state near you

What’s happening in New York is going to be happening across the United States.

Remember when NERC warned about a heightened risk of blackouts this summer?

That was because someone at least is paying attention to facts.

The facts simply state that if you curb reliable, 24/7 power generation and you do it faster than you build unreliable, occasional generation, you’re going to get blackouts.

Sure, NERC blames the danger on “extreme weather,” but we all know what they meant.

Actually, they said themselves what they meant after they got the “extreme weather” out of the way:

“Limited operation of coal-fired power plants due to new environmental regulations, low water levels on major reservoirs, unexpected tripping of wind and solar resources, and curtailed transfers to areas in need also posed reliability concerns.”

Translation: with a great shortfall in supply comes a great danger of blackouts.

Children Sue State for Pro-Oil Policy

Next week, a first-of-its-kind trial is going to start in Montana.

Dubbed Held vs. State of Montana, the case was brought against the state by 16 plaintiffs between the ages of 5 and 22.

“I’m gonna sue you!”

Did you ever say that to a friend or sibling when you were a kid? Yeah, so did the Oilman.

Several states and cities have been suing Big Oil with varying success over the past few years.

Now, appetite is growing among climate-anxious kids. Right, the kids. Definitely not their teachers or parents pushing these ideas…

That appetite was no doubt whetted by the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that such cases can be heard at the state rather than a federal level.

That ruling was hailed by activists as a big win against Big Oil.

Well, they were definitely right.

The kids suing the industry will be telling the court how climate change is affecting their lives and how it will continue to affect it.

Apparently, climate used to be totally static when their parents were kids.

A tsunami of litigation

The Montana case looks like the first sign of a wave of litigation looming over the horizon.

It’s so easy to sue: just accuse the state of pursuing an energy policy that violates the kids’ constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment.”

The sky’s the limit.

The implications are myriad.

Summed up, they come down to the possibility that citizens who can’t even vote yet can set the direction for a state’s energy policy.

If any such lawsuits end with a victory for the plaintiffs, it means states can be forced to commit to an energy transition.

Regardless of whether it is even possible: did you hear that England needs 4,700 years to build all the wind turbines it needs for net zero?
