Shell Slaps Greenpeace with Lawsuit for Boarding Vessel
Shell is suing Greenpeace for boarding a vessel en route to an oil field earlier this year.
Per the company, boarding a moving vessel at sea is extremely dangerous.
It also happens to be illegal.
Big Oil strikes back
In January, Greenpeace activists boarded the vessel, which was transporting a FPSO to the Penguins field in the North Sea.
They boasted about it on social media.
And do you know how they got on the vessel?
From boats launched from a former icebreaker… which runs on diesel.
And the boats themselves run on oil-derived fuel.
But sure, board a ship and wave around banners saying, “Stop drilling. Start paying.”
It was high time that the oil industry started responding to such actions.
“One of the biggest legal threats”
“The claim is one of the biggest legal threats against the Greenpeace network’s ability to campaign in the organization’s more than 50-year history.”
Cry us a river, Greenpeace.
The less you campaign in this dangerous and, let’s repeat, illegal way, the better for everyone involved.
And that includes your activists.
Shell is demanding a puny $2.1 million in damages.
Realistically, the outcome of the case may not be in favor of the supermajor.
What with the transition trumping everything else, including common sense?
After all, a court ordered Shell to cut its emissions by 45% by 2030.
Still, it is a positive development that the industry no longer sits on its hands when provoked.

Kinder Morgan Snaps Texas Gas Pipelines for $1.82 Billion
Kinder Morgan has struck a deal with NextEra Energy Partners to buy its gas pipeline network for close to $2 billion.
The move is the latest in a series of acquisitions in the pipeline space.
Shortages breed M&A
Building a pipeline in America has become a challenging venture, to put it mildly.
There is so much opposition from environmentalists and the government that developers can’t be bothered to fight anymore.
But demand for the goodies that pipelines transport from A to B and all the way to the end of the alphabet is on the rise.
And so are acquisitions in the space.
The network that Kinder Morgan bought from NextEra supplies gas to utilities in southern Texas.
Pipeline consolidation
The Kinder Morgan deal is the latest in a series of seven acquisitions since the start of the year.
All but one of these deals have a price tag of over $1 billion.
The largest—ONEOK’s purchase of Magellan Midstream Partners—came in at $18.8 billion.
Buyers seem to be really generous with midstream assets and operations.
It makes one wonder if oil and gas are really as doomed as various forecasters try to convince us.
The latest came from Carbon Tracker—the climate NGO has warned oil and gas production plans to exceed Paris Agreement targets.
It seems not many care about those targets, though.
They’re too busy buying pipelines.

It just goes to show how many activists don’t actually want to solve the problems the profess to want to solve.
