Alberta Strikes Back against Federal Energy Regulation

The Premier of Alberta this week invoked a controversial act.

The aim is to shield the province from Ottawa’s new energy rules.

The Sovereignty Act basically means Alberta refuses to comply with federal law.

Trudeau’s low-carbon baby

The regulation that Alberta is rebelling against is dubbed Clean Electricity Regulations.

Guess what’s in these. Yup, more wind and solar and less gas.

The aim of the regulations is to reduce emissions and have a net-zero grid by 2035.

But Alberta generates a lot of its power from gas.

And Premier Smith says if it stops, there will be blackouts.

Which is what pretty much everyone with some energy knowledge has been saying for a while now.

But the Trudeau government is relentless in its efforts to “clean up” Canada’s grid.

So, it is enforcing federal laws to that effect.

And Alberta is saying it won’t play along.

The Alberta response and what’s next

Some say the Sovereignty Act is just for show.

It allows the Alberta legislators to set up a state-owned power generation company.

And use it in case private generators throw in the towel because of the CERs.

Smith herself says she’s ready to go to court of Ottawa and doesn’t back down.

It could sure become interesting.

It could also get very, very cold for some who are less willing to fight the new mandates.

Cold and dark.

OPEC Slams IEA for Vilifying Oil, Gas

OPEC has accused the International Energy Agency of vilifying the oil and gas industry and finger-pointing.

In a punchy statement, the cartel also accused the IEA of limiting the sovereign choices of countries and called it “undiplomatic, to say the least.”

Celebrity Deathmatch Round 2

The OPEC statement follows the latest IEA report, which, if you remember, said oil and gas need to die.

It also said carbon capture was not a solution but an “illusion”.

Of course, OPEC was bound to respond.

Which it did in kind, saying the IEA was trying to tell others what to do and that its calls went against the Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement stipulated a “bottom-up” approach to the transition.

The IEA is loudly calling for a top-down approach where the transition is mandated.

OPEC’s secretary-general took a not-too-gentle stab at the agency. A well-deserved one.

“The truth that needs to be spoken is simple and clear to those who wish to see it,” he said.

“It is that the energy challenges before us are enormous and complex and cannot be limited to one binary question.”

Will oil and gas get bolder?

This is not OPEC’s first sharp reaction to an IEA report.

In fact, the cartel has recently become quite open in its criticism of the agency, which has basically turned into a transition advocacy.

OPEC’s had enough.

But it seems the oil and gas industry is close to having enough, too.

The supermajors are also speaking out against the worst delusions of the transition.

And these are both good things.

Who could’ve imagined OPEC, of all groups would turn into a voice of reason?
